So – the government asks you to do something for them. And they tell you it’s legal. Is it up to you to hire a lawyer to find out if that’s true?
I would hope not.
This story in the NYTimes is about how phone companies have contributed a lot more than usual to Senator Rockefeller. (chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee)
AT&T and Verizon have been lobbying hard to insulate themselves from suits over their reported roles in the security agency program by gaining legal immunity from Congress.
It’s a sad day when you have to attempt to buy a senator in order to protect yourself from lawsuits for doing what the government asked you to do with the assumption that it was legal.
If I remember correctly, not every phone company cooperated. I wonder how it was presented to them?
