Taxes

Here’s the quote of the day.

Now, if you have been following this so far, you have learned that people who pay no income tax will get an income tax refund. You have also learned that this check will represent relief for the payroll taxes these people do pay. And you have been assured that this rebate check won’t actually come out of payroll taxes, lest we harm Social Security.

You have to admire the audacity. With one touch of the Obama magic, what otherwise would be described as taking money from Peter to pay Paul is now transformed into Paul’s tax relief. Where a tax cut for payroll taxes paid will not in fact come from payroll taxes. And where all these plans come together under the rhetorical umbrella of “Making Work Pay.”

ooohhhkayyyy.

“Whatever else it is, this election is a referendum on two very different visions of America.

I am pretty sure that Joe would agree with that. Jonah Goldberg of the LAtimes has a good column today. None of this has been about whether or not Joe will receive a tax “rebate” or not. It’s about who gets to be in charge of Joe’s wealth to make certain he “spreads it around” to the proper people.

In his acceptance speech, he [Obama] artfully replaced the idea of the American dream with the century-old progressive nostrum of “America’s promise.”

But the two visions are in opposition: the former individualistic, the latter collectivist. We each have our own idea of the American dream. Joe the Plumber’s is to own a small plumbing company; yours might be something else entirely. In America, that’s fine, because the pursuit of happiness is an individual, not a collective, right.

………………

Millions of Americans don’t share this vision. They don’t see the economy as a pie, whereby your slice can only get bigger if someone else’s gets smaller. They don’t begrudge the wealthy their wealth; they only ask to be given the same opportunities. They look at countries such as France and, rather than envy their socialized medicine and short workweeks, they fear their joblessness and tax policies that punish entrepreneurialism. People like Tito Munoz look at America and see an open path to their own American dream.

It would be nice if the media at least tried to understand this point.

Just go read the whole thing.

  1. The left-wing illuminati are going to raise taxes, and the number on those who won’t get an increase will go down thanks to Mr. Obama.
