Gloria Steinem doesn’t do a completely horrible job of keeping to the issues, but she doesn’t do a very good job either.
This isn’t the first time a boss has picked an unqualified woman just because she agrees with him and opposes everything most other women want and need.
So she accuses Palin of being unqualified, but doesn’t say how she is unqualified. Until later. When she cringes while trying to imagine Palin vs Biden in a debate on foreign policy and quoting Palin’s lack of focus on Iraq. That’s it.
[Side note: When Palin was asked about Iraq, she was governor of Alaska in an interview. There is so much going on in Iraq these days and so many changes that it is hard to keep up. If you’re up for the VP and getting interviewed I doubt it would be a good thing to have a strong opinion on the subject, just yet. But I suspect she DID have opinions and knew a few things. Her son is going there after all. The beginning of life is a time honored question that really doesn’t change day to day, yet Obama didn’t seem to think he should have an opinion on that question either…??]
Feminism has never been about getting a job for one woman. It’s about making life more fair for women everywhere.
Feminism is about making certain that females have the same equality of opportunity as males. That’s what it’s about. Which means that you don’t go dissing Palin for working while a newborn is around without noting that Mr. Palin is around 14 days out of every month vs the normal 8 days out of every month that most parents put in. (Dr. Laura) Those kids ARE cared for. (ht Environmental Republican)
Back to Gloria:
Palin’s value to those patriarchs is clear: She opposes just about every issue that women support by a majority or plurality.
Uh “patriarchs”? Come on Gloria. Give me a break. I’m trying to give you credit here. “She opposes just about every issue that women support by a majority or plurality”.
That may be true, but what is your point? That she’s not a real woman? That she’s a typical Republican? That McCain should have chosen a different woman who did not agree with the GOP platform? I would think that McCain would want a solid conservative Republican woman as his VP. I thought bringing a woman (or a minority) in would be the best thing he could do to shake up his campaign and it was.
Are you nuts Gloria? Would you “feel” better if he’d of brought in Joe Lieberman?
She believes that creationism should be taught in public schools but disbelieves global warming;
From what I understand the creationism bit is fuzzy and I’ve never seen that she disbelieves in global warming. She just disbelieves in putting unendangered species on the endangered species list.
she opposes gun control but supports government control of women’s wombs;
I’m a woman and I oppose gun control. And I know tons of woman who are antiabortion.
she opposes stem cell research but approves “abstinence-only” programs, which increase unwanted births, sexually transmitted diseases and abortions;
I’m a woman and oppose government funded stem cell research and I’m pretty certain that abstinence only programs work equally as well as others.
she tried to use taxpayers’ millions for a state program to shoot wolves from the air but didn’t spend enough money to fix a state school system with the lowest high-school graduation rate in the nation;
I’m not happy with the wolf thing at all and I’m unsure about the school bit.
she runs with a candidate who opposes the Fair Pay Act but supports $500 million in subsidies for a natural gas pipeline across Alaska;
I’m not opposed to pipelines.
she supports drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve, though even McCain has opted for the lesser evil of offshore drilling.
Tons of people do. I suspect McCain will soon.
Here’s her ending:
And American women, who suffer more because of having two full-time jobs than from any other single injustice, finally have support on a national stage from male leaders who know that women can’t be equal outside the home until men are equal in it. Barack Obama and Joe Biden are campaigning on their belief that men should be, can be and want to be at home for their children.
This could be huge.
“American women suffer more”? I’m not sure where that is coming from.
And since when are Obama and Biden campaigning on their belief that men should be, can be and want to be home?? I have yet to hear either one of them bring up men’s issues.
(What are “men’s issues” if not family issues??)
If this is true and that’s their theme I’d say Todd Palin makes a great representative for the Obama/Biden ticket.
