Mr. Thomas

I linked to the ABC shortened version of his memoirs yesterday, which were interesting, but I have not read his book or seen his interviews.
Today’s Anita Hills response to his recent popularity, feeling smeared herself.

I don’t know either people, but I do believe it’s possible to “sexually harrass” and have no one complain about it until you’re in a position for the Supreme Court. Not due entirely to a leftist push but also to some personal responsibility. Who among us women >40 years old hasn’t been sexually harrassed in the work place. Mostly – big deal. And yay that it’s going the way of the dinosaur. But mostly we can just handle it.
Mostly it occurs in private. Mostly you don’t complain about it and may even give it right back.

So who knows. In the ABC article Mr. Thomas mentioned on probably 7 or 8 occassions that he never had a safety net and so was always worried. Me, I’ve got family that will always take me in so I’m not sure what that’s like, but I’m unsure why he kept mentioning it. It began to sound a little whiney by part 5 of the article.

So again, who knows. I liked the man based on his interview. And based on Anita Hill’s current job (“a professor of social policy, law and women’s studies at Brandeis University, is a visiting scholar at the Newhouse Center for the Humanities at Wellesley College.”) it wouldn’t surprise me if she wasn’t just a bit militant/sensitive about things like sexual harrassment.

He still sounds like a fascinating man and though he probably was placed there as a token black man on the court, he sounds like a good conservative choice.

UPDATE: Apparently I’m a bit of a freak of nature. According to The Volokh Conspiracy, (ht Instapundit) you either believe on or the other because of an

unhealthy tendency to equate ideological disagreement with moral depravity.

Thank goodness I don’t have that!

I’m not sure who to believe but
-if he did it,
-she sure didn’t complain about it (by her own admission)
-so he can’t be held to strict standards when they were kind of fuzzier back then anyway and no one asked him to stop.
-what are the requirements for the Supreme Court again??

-if he didn’t
-she should apologize
-and the people who used her should too
